der Regen -> des Regens - Sentence Change: Sie lächelt trotz ihrer Schmerzen. (She smiles in spite of her pain.)
ihre Schmerzen (plural) -> ihrer Schmerzen
Colloquial Alert: In casual, spoken German, you will often hear trotz used with the Dative case (Trotz dem Regen). While technically incorrect in formal grammar, it's incredibly common. But for now, stick to the Genitive to impress your teacher!
3. während (during)
Use this when two things are happening at the same time.
- Sentence Change: Während des Urlaubs habe ich viel gelesen. (During the vacation, I read a lot.)
der Urlaub -> des Urlaubs - Sentence Change: Er schlief während der Besprechung ein. (He fell asleep during the meeting.)

4. wegen (because of, due to)
This explains the cause or reason for something.
- Sentence Change: Wegen des Sturms bleiben wir drinnen. (Because of the storm, we are staying inside.)
der Sturm -> des Sturms - Sentence Change: Ich rufe an wegen deines Autos. (I am calling because of your car.)
dein Auto -> deines Autos
Colloquial Alert (Part 2!): Just like trotz, wegen is very frequently used with the Dative in everyday speech (Wegen dem Sturm). Again, Genitive is the "proper" way, but don't be shocked if you hear the Dative version on the street.
5. The "halb" Family: innerhalb & außerhalb (inside/within & outside of)
These denote location or time boundaries.
- innerhalb:
- Innerhalb der Stadt darf man nur 50 km/h fahren. (Within the city, one may only drive 50 km/h.)
- Bitte zahlen Sie die Rechnung innerhalb eines Monats. (Please pay the bill within a month.)
- außerhalb:

6. The "halb" Cousins: oberhalb & unterhalb (above & below)
Used mostly for geographical or physical descriptions.
- Die Burg liegt oberhalb des Dorfes. (The castle lies above the village.)
- Das Tal befindet sich unterhalb der Berge. (The valley is located below the mountains.)
7. The "seits" Siblings: diesseits, jenseits, beiderseits (on this side of, on the other side of, on both sides of)
Very poetic and useful for giving directions involving rivers or borders.
- Diesseits des Flusses ist ein Park. (On this side of the river is a park.)
- Das Hotel liegt jenseits der Grenze. (The hotel is located on the other side of the border.)
- Beiderseits der Straße stehen Bäume. (On both sides of the street stand trees.)
8. The Formal Friends: aufgrund, anlässlich, infolge, laut, seitens (due to, on the occasion of, as a result of, according to, on the part of)
You'll see these more often in written German, news articles, or formal letters.
- Aufgrund des Wetters fällt das Spiel aus. (Due to the weather, the game is canceled.)
- Anlässlich seines Geburtstags gab es eine große Party. (On the occasion of his birthday, there was a big party.)
- Infolge des Unfalls war die Straße gesperrt. (As a result of the accident, the street was closed.)
- Laut des Berichts steigen die Kosten. (According to the report, costs are rising.)
- Es gab keine Beschwerden seitens der Kunden. (There were no complaints on the part of the customers.)
