What is a subordinate clause and how does its word order differ?
A subordinate clause (Nebensatz) is a dependent clause that cannot stand alone. It is introduced by a subordinating conjunction or a relative pronoun.
Word Order (KATI rule):
Konjunktion (conjunction)
Alle anderen Satzteile (all other sentence parts)
Teil des Prädikats (part of the predicate - e.g., separable prefix)
Infinitiv/konjugiertes Verb (infinitive/conjugated verb - at the very end)
Example
Ich weiß, dass er heute Abend kommt. (I know that he is coming this evening.)
dass (conjunction)
er heute Abend (other parts)
kommt (conjugated verb at the end)
