When do I use "mögen" vs. "möchten"?

mögen: To like (a general preference). Conjugates irregularly.

möchten: "Would like" (a polite desire, the Konjunktiv II of mögen). Behaves like a modal verb but is more polite.

Example

Ich mag Schokolade. (I like chocolate.)

Ich möchte einen Kaffee bestellen. (I would like to order a coffee - polite request.)
