What do modal verbs mean and how do they conjugate?

Modal verbs express necessity, ability, permission, desire, etc. They have irregular conjugations, especially in the singular, and take an infinitive verb at the end of the sentence.

können: can, be able to

müssen: must, have to

sollen: should, ought to

wollen: want to

dürfen: may, be allowed to

mögen: to like (often used as möchten - would like)

Conjugation Pattern (e.g., können):

ich kann

du kannst

er/sie/es kann

wir können

ihr könnt

sie/Sie können

Example

Ich kann Deutsch sprechen. (I can speak German.)

Du musst jetzt gehen. (You must go now.)

Sie will ein Buch lesen. (She wants to read a book.)
