Separable & Inseparable Prefix Verbs

What are separable prefix verbs and how do they work?

Separable prefixes (e.g., an-, auf-, aus-, ein-, mit-, nach-, vor-, zu-) split from the verb in main clauses in the present and Präteritum tense. The prefix moves to the end of the sentence.

Example

anrufen (to call)

Ich rufe dich an. (I call you.)

Er macht das Licht aus. (He turns off the light.)
