Konjunktiv I & II (Subjunctive Mood)
What is Konjunktiv II and when do I use it?
Konjunktiv II (subjunctive II) expresses hypothetical situations, wishes, polite requests, and advice.
Formation:
Regular: Präteritum stem + umlaut (if possible) + -e + personal endings.
Most common: Use the würde + infinitive construction. This is simpler and often preferred, especially in spoken German.
Example
Wenn ich reich wäre, würde ich eine Weltreise machen. (If I were rich, I would travel the world.)
Ich hätte gern einen Kaffee. (I would like a coffee.)
Du solltest mehr lernen. (You should study more.)
